China Leather Garment Export Prices Rise 26 Percent in 2026: A Leather Jacket Buyer Brief

Oct 23,2026

China's leather garment exports were worth USD 110 million in the first eight months of 2026, 37.9 percent more than a year earlier, while volume rose 9.3 percent to 3.069 million pieces. Xinhua published the figures on October 22, 2026, citing the China Leather Association. For buyers building a leather jacket programme, the shipment count matters less than the distance between those two growth rates.

Value grew about four times faster than volume, and that gap lifted the average export unit price to USD 36.5 per piece, up 26.1 percent year on year. That line is the most useful signal in the release, and it deserves a careful reading before any 2027 quotation is accepted.

What the October 22 Release Says

The data covers cumulative January to August trade, not a single month. Compared with the cumulative figure reported a month earlier, export volume growth accelerated by 4.7 percentage points, export value growth slowed by 0.3 percentage points, and unit price growth slowed by 6.0 percentage points. Prices are still climbing, in other words, but the pace of the climb has eased while shipments have picked up.

Several things the release does not say are worth noting. It gives no destination breakdown, no split by material, no distinction between finished garments and lighter leather items, and no trade term such as FOB or CIF. It also offers no explanation for the price movement. Any reading of the numbers should stop at the arithmetic and leave the causes to a supplier conversation.

Reading the Numbers: 37.9 Percent Value, 9.3 Percent Volume

The arithmetic is internally consistent. Dividing the value growth rate by the volume growth rate gives 1.261, which is the reported 26.1 percent rise in unit price. What the average does not show is composition. An average unit value can rise because every SKU became dearer, or because the mix shifted toward heavier, more detailed garments, or because lower-priced volume left the export basket altogether.

The deceleration is the part buyers can use. Unit price growth slowed by 6.0 percentage points against the previous cumulative month while volume growth accelerated. That suggests the sharpest part of the price adjustment is behind the market, an argument for negotiating firm multi-season terms now. It is not an argument for expecting a decline.

What It Changes for 2027 Leather Jacket Orders

Quotation validity is the first thing to renegotiate. A price held for 90 days on the strength of a 2025 quote is exposed to a different input market. Ask for a written validity window, and ask what happens to the price if hide selection or lining specification changes between sampling and bulk.

Specification discipline is the second. Unit value moves with hide type, thickness, tannage and hardware, so two factories can quote the same style at very different prices without either being wrong. A specification sheet that fixes these points makes quotations comparable and gives you a defensible basis for the target price you set.

Compliance belongs in the same conversation. GB 20400-2026, China's mandatory safety standard for leather and fur products, takes effect on April 1, 2027, inside the production window for orders confirmed this winter. Buyers shipping to Europe should confirm that the limits in our EU formaldehyde limit for leather articles are covered in the same test package.

Documents to Request Before You Sign

Ask for the quote sheet to name the tannery and the hide lot, not only the country of origin. Ask for a substance test report covering hexavalent chromium, azo dyes and formaldehyde, and check that the report dates from the current production period rather than an earlier season. Where a report is older, request a fresh sample from the bulk lot.

Then match paperwork to goods. The packing list should carry the same style references and lot numbers as the test report, because that link is what a customs officer or a retail compliance team will check first. Suppliers who can produce it quickly are usually the ones whose process is already under control.

Did China's leather garment exports really grow 37.9 percent in value?

Yes, for the cumulative January to August 2026 period against the same months of 2025, according to China Leather Association figures reported by Xinhua on October 22, 2026. The same release puts volume growth at 9.3 percent, so the value gain reflects a higher average unit price rather than a surge in pieces shipped.

Does a 26.1 percent higher average unit price mean every jacket costs more?

No. It is an average across the whole export basket, and it moves with product mix as well as with price. A buyer ordering a defined style should negotiate against that style's specification, material consumption and hardware list, and treat the national average as context rather than as a benchmark to accept.

When does GB 20400-2026 apply to leather jackets made in China?

The standard was published on March 31, 2026 and takes effect on April 1, 2027, according to the national standards record published by the Standardization Administration. Details of the transition are set out in our earlier brief on China's mandatory leather safety standard.

Danke works with European and North American buyers on private label leather jacket programmes and keeps specification, testing and lot records aligned from sampling through shipment.
