US Cattle Slaughter Falls 7 Percent as Feedlot Placements Hit 30-Year Low: A Leather Jacket Hide Supply Brief
US commercial cattle slaughter fell 7 percent in September 2026 from a year earlier, and feedlot placements dropped to their lowest September level since the data series began in 1996. For buyers building a Leather Jacket programme for autumn 2027, the two USDA releases published on October 22 and October 23, 2026 describe a smaller raw hide pool rather than a one-month dip.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported September commercial cattle slaughter at 2.30 million head, against 2.47 million head in September 2025. Slaughter for January through September 2026 reached 20.70 million head, 7 percent below the same period last year.
What the two October releases show
Beef production followed slaughter down. September output was 2.04 billion pounds, 6 percent below September 2025, and the January to September total of 18.41 billion pounds was 5 percent lower year on year.
Carcasses were heavier. Average live weight in September was 1,447 pounds, 14 pounds above a year earlier, and the year to date average of 1,456 pounds is 32 pounds above 2025. Heavier animals partly offset the smaller kill but do not restore the number of hides a slaughter line produces.
The Cattle on Feed report added the forward view. Feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more held 11.37 million cattle on October 1, 2026, close to the 11.42 million a year earlier.
That flat headline hides the movement underneath. September placements were 1.78 million head, 12 percent below 2025 and the lowest for any September since the series started, while marketings were 1.52 million head, 7 percent lower and also a September record low.
Why placements matter more than the inventory figure
Cattle counted in September placements will be sold to slaughter several months later. A placement low of this size points to fewer finished cattle moving through plants in the first half of 2027, which is when autumn 2027 hide requirements are normally reserved.
The inventory figure looks stable because marketings fell as well. Fewer cattle left feedlots in September, so the number on feed held its level even though fewer animals entered.
Hide supply follows slaughter because hides are a by-product of meat production, not something farms raise on purpose. Exports account for 95 percent of all US leather and hide use, according to the Leather and Hide Council of America, so a smaller US kill reaches tanneries far beyond the United States.

Lambskin and calfskin are tightening faster
The smaller species moved by more than cattle. Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter was 176,000 head in September, 5 percent below 2025, and 1.59 million head for January to September, also 5 percent lower.
Calf slaughter fell harder. September volume was 7,900 head, 15 percent below the prior year, and the year to date figure of 68,300 head is 28 percent below the 94,900 head recorded in the first nine months of 2025.
For a lightweight lambskin jacket, that is the number to watch. These categories start from a smaller base than cowhide, so the same percentage decline removes fewer skins but leaves less room to switch specification when a colour or thickness runs short.
What leather jacket buyers can fix now
First, confirm raw material allocation before sampling starts. Ask the tannery for a written availability window for the exact article, finish and thickness you intend to use, then match it against your own sampling and bulk dates.
Second, write weight and grain tolerance into the specification. When supply is short, tanneries sort differently, and a jacket specified at a narrow thickness range can arrive with a different hand feel if no tolerance is agreed.
Third, qualify a second tannery for the same article while the programme is still in development. Danke keeps hide selection, cutting and finishing under one roof in Dalian, and the team can review allocation options for a 2027 line on WhatsApp +86 13234076432.
Danke, the trading name of Dalian Danke Fashion Co., Ltd, has produced private label leather jackets and coats for wholesale buyers for more than 30 years.
The factory runs a private label leather jacket programme from sampling through grading and bulk, and the leather jacket manufacturing process page sets out how hide selection is handled on the floor. Specifications for the men's leather jacket line are available at www.dankeleatherjacket.com.
Frequently asked questions
Did US cattle slaughter really fall 7 percent?
The Livestock Slaughter report released on October 22, 2026 puts September commercial cattle slaughter at 2.30 million head against 2.47 million head in September 2025, a 7 percent decline. The January to September total is also 7 percent lower than in 2025.
Does a smaller US kill mean leather jacket prices must rise?
Less raw material, and hide is one cost line in a jacket. Danke does not publish price forecasts. What changes first is availability and the choice of articles, so buyers who fix allocation early keep more options than those who wait for bulk confirmation.
Which hides are most affected?
Calfskin and lambskin, because September calf slaughter was 15 percent below 2025 and the year to date figure is 28 percent lower. Cowhide supply tracks the cattle numbers, which fell 7 percent in the same period.
